Banko-yaki originated in the mid-Edo period when the wealthy merchant Nunami Rouzan from Kuwana established a kiln in what is now Asahi Town, Mie Prefecture. Rouzan stamped his works with the mark “Banko” or “Banko Fueki” (meaning “eternal and unchanging”) in the hope that his creations would remain unchanged and treasured forever. This mark is said to be the origin of the name “Banko-yaki”

Banko-yaki encompasses a wide variety of pottery, ranging from everyday items like tableware and flower vases that enrich daily life to industrial molds. The current main production areas of Banko-yaki are Yokkaichi City and Komono Town, where more than 100 kilns and wholesalers operate. In addition, various specialized suppliers of glazes, clay, molds, and raw materials support the Banko-yaki industry.

In an area with limited natural resources such as pottery clay, predecessors honed their skills, conducted extensive research, and keenly responded to the needs of each era to produce various products. Through dedicated effort and innovation over 300 years, Banko-yaki’s tradition has been passed down, helping the region develop into one of Japan’s foremost pottery centers.

Handcrafted Pottery That Enriches Everyday Life

Pottery is an essential part of our daily meals in Japan. While in the most practical sense, a single plate or bowl may be enough, something feels missing when that’s all there is.

When you use a piece you truly love, or choose a vessel that complements the meal you've made, it adds a quiet joy—a small sense of care that brings warmth to daily life.

As makers of handmade ceramics, we craft each piece with the way people live in mind—pottery that is easy to use, that feels good in the hand, and that becomes more cherished with time.

In many ways, creating pottery feels just like preparing a meal. You make it with someone in mind, putting thought and care into every step, without cutting corners. We believe that when something is made with such intention, it carries the power to bring happiness.

Our wish is for the pottery we make to spread smiles to those who use it, to those who make it, and to everyone around them.

With this in our hearts, we continue our work as a kiln of Banko-yaki, sharing the spirit of Yokkaichi with people across Japan and beyond.
